We are at the crossroads of an unprecedented transition in the way we think and do science.Because of the rapid progress in computer technology and electronics, we are in a better position to interrogate the microparticles and living cells to the entire universe through research. This symposium is designed to serve as a forum for discussion on topics that are related to natural sciences such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biological sciences. There will be keynote speeches on the changing landscape of natural science domain and challenges that exist in Nepal for catching up with the 6 rest of the world. In addition, there will be scientific presentations on research data preferably that intersect more than one natural science disciplines.

Dr Tara Sigdel, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at University of California San Francisco (UCSF) in California, USA. He is a chemist and a biochemist by education and a translational researcher in disease diagnostics and biomarker discovery and immunology by training. Dr. Sigdel got his postdoctoral training at Stanford University, USA where he was involved research in identifying kidney transplant dysfunction and acute rejection and other human diseases such as IgA nephropathy and Moyamoya  disease. As a researcher Dr. Sigdel has more than 80 publications and has more than 10 scientific patents. Currently he is funded through NIH to work on kidney transplant research and kidney injury related to COVID-19 disease.  Dr. Sigdel received Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Miami University, USA. He has M.Sc. education from Tribhuvan University.

Dr. Sigdel serves as the Chair of Science, Technology and Innovation Committee of NRNA NCC USA. Also serves as a champion for health and medical/health field of the Nepal Science Foundation Trust (NSFT) Board.  He coordinated the National Knowledge Convention 2020, organized by NRNA NCC USA. 

Dr. Sigdel got his school education and up to B.Sc. level education in Pokhara. Before coming to USA, Dr. Sigdel was a chemistry teacher at Budhanilkantha School and lecturer at Tri-chandra College.

 Prof Dr Narayan Adhikari, Ph.D., is Professor of Physics at Tribhuvan University Kirtipur Kathmandu. He has been teaching physics at Central Department of Physics Tribhuvan University from 1996 AD. He was appointed as a lecturer (Assistant Professor) in 1997. He was promoted to Associate professor of physics in 2009 and professor in 2015. He is a Senior Associate Member of The Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics Trieste Italy.

Dr. Adhikari obtained M. Sc. in physics (with distinction, Gold Medalist) in 1996 from Tribhuvan University Kirtipur Kathmandu. He did Post Graduate Diploma in Condensed Matter Physics from The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics Trieste Italy during 1997-1998. From 1998 to 2001 he studied at Martin Luther University Halle/Saale Germany to obtain Ph.D. in natural science (Physics). He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Rice University Texas USA during 2001- 2002. Further he worked at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute New York USA from 2002 to 2004 as postdoctoral fellow. He carried out his third postdoctoral study/research at Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research Mainz Germany during 2004-2005.

 

Keynote Speaker:

Prof Dr Dharma K Baskota, M.D, Doctor of Medicine, is Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University. Dr. Baskota, ENT Surgeon, is Professor of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) at Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital Kathmandu (TUTH).  He hold the post of Assistant Instructor/House Officer in ENT, Assistant Professor in ENT and Associate Professor in ENT at TUTH. He was unit chief of MS-ENT-Head and Neck Surgery Programme at Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital Kathmandu (TUTH). Further his service in many different posts is highly appreciated. Moreover he served as chairman of Nepal Health Research Council, Government of Nepal, from 29 September, 2014 to June 4, 2015 (Ashwin 13, 2071 to Jestha 21, 2072). He also hold the post of chairman of Nepal Medical Council from 4th June, 2015 to 3rd June, 2019 (21 Jestha, 2072 to 20 Jestha, 2076). He was Regional Director (Kathmandu Regional Centre) of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan- Nepal (2003-2016).

Professor Baskota has been involed in many policy making bodies to serve the nation. He was member of Draft Committee of National Health Professional Act-2073. He also served as Member of Vice Chancellor recommendation committee of National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS). He is senator of NAMS, B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences Dharan and Patan Academy of Health Sciences. He is Member of Higher Technical Education Promotion & Monitoring Committee, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

Professor Baskota obtained his Certificate in General Medicine (CGM) from Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital Kathmandu (TUTH) in 1979 and Doctor of Medicine with Honours from Patrice Lumumba People’s Friendship University, Moscow in 1988. He also studied Post Graduate Diploma in Laryngo-otology  (DLO) and obtained the degree in 1993. He received “Best Doctor Award” of TUTH in 1997 and 2007. He was awarded “Suprawal Janasewashree Medal” by President of Nepal.

Professor Baskota has published more than five dozens of research papers in International Peer Reviewed Journals. He has also published many articles to create public awareness. He has presented 31 different original scientific research papers related to his areas of expertise ENT- Head & Neck Surgery in National, Regional and International Conferences. He has chaired 13 different scientific sessions. He is section editor of book entitled “An Illustrated Textbook of Ear, Nose & Throat and Head and Neck Surgery”.  He has also served as a member of international Editorial Board of many scientific journals in the areas of his research interest. Currently he is involved in supervising and guiding five different prospective studies in TUTH.

 

Dr Giridhari Sharma Paudel, Ph.D.,  is a Vice-chairman of the Policy and Planning Commission of Gandaki Province Nepal since August 2018. He is leading to major policy and plan formulation of the province. He provided leadership to formulate the first five-year periodic plan with long term vision of achieving prosperity of the province by 2043 in 2019, Sustainable Development Goals Baseline Report 2018-2030 in 2019, Approach Paper in 2019 and Status Paper of the province in 2018.  Earlier he worked in UNDP as a National Project Manager at the “Strengthening National Planning and Monitoring Project” implemented jointly by UNDP and the Government of Nepal 2014-2018. He also served as a Planning, Monitoring and System Strengthening Specialist in “Nepal Health Sector Support Program” funded by DFID and managed by the Option International 2011-2013. He volunteered as a Vice-president and President of the Nepal Agroforestry Foundation 2009-2015 and the Executive Board Member of the Kathmandu Forestry College 2004-2015.  He worked in different positions from third class Section Officer to Special Class Director General in Family Planning Association of Nepal 1990-2010.

He received his first Master of Geography from Tribhuvan University Nepal in 1986, second Master in 1996 and Doctor of Philosophy in Regional and Rural Development Planning, from the School of Environment, Resources and Development, Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok Thailand in 2001.  

Dr. Paudel published 20 papers in international peer review journals, 30 papers in national journals and workshop proceedings, authored two books, co-edited two workshop proceedings, written 10 guidelines and manuals, completed 20 project/program evaluations as a team leader, supervised 30 third party project/program evaluation, written 35 project proposals for funding, written more than 100 institutional reports, and participated in 44 international and national conferences and presented paper. He received Mahendra Biddha Bhusan (ka) (1st Class Education Medal), outstanding student and staff awards and appreciations from 8 different institutions. 

Prof Dr Nanda Singh

Nanda Bahadur Singh (BSc-Bio; BA-Maj.Eng; B.Ed-Eng.Ling; MSc-Zoology:ecology) is a full professor at the Central Department of Zoology, Tribhuvan University (T.U.), Kathmandu, Nepal for the last 25 years (since 1995 to present)  is the first Nepalese researcher to be accredited with PhD under Japanese government fellowship (Monbukagakusho) in the field of ethno-genomics (human genetics/molecular anthropology/ population genetics) and molecular ethnobiology from the University of Tokyo, Japan in 2002. Recently Prof. Singh has been nominated as the Vice-Chancellor of Mid-Western University based in Surkhet, Nepal. 

Prof. Singh conducted his research on eight gene systems of nine genetic markers among highly isolated six Nepalese ethnic groups (Chepang, Chidimar, Gurung, Munda, Raute and Thakali). Correlation between genes and diseases (malaria, AIDS, Cancer, human skin pigmentation, and alcoholism) was one of aspects of molecular analysis for his PhD research. In addition to genomic analysis, most dreadful four viruses (HBV, HCV, HIV and HTLV-1) were also serologically detected among Nepalese ethnic groups.

Prof. Singh is also the first scholar to initiate the research on ethnobiology in Nepal. He has been conferred “Nepal Vidhya Bhuvan “B” and “A” Class Medals” for his academic excellence in 1996 and 2003, respectively. He has also been handed over the “NAST Talent Scientist Award 2005” for his novel innovative ethno-genomic and molecular ethnobiology research among six indigenous populations in Nepal.  Prof. Singh in his capacity has already served as a visiting professor of ethnobiology at Yamagata University of Arts and Desgin, Yamagata in Japan (1997) for six months as well as a visiting professor of medical genetics at the College of Medicine, Henan University, P.R.China under the bilateral agreement signed between Tribhuvan University, Nepal and Henan University, China to teach MBBS students in the academic year of Sep, 2005~July, 2006. He has also served as a visiting Scholar to Kangwon National University, Samchoek city, South Korea to deliver a lectured on a topic entitled “Ethnogenetics and Ethnobiology of Six Indigenous Nationalities in Nepal” on February 20, 2008 and as international guest speaker at Nagoya university, Japan on the topic entitled “Minority Situations and the Discourse of Symbiosis in the 21th Century” from March 7-8, 2011 at the invitation by Dean, Michiko Maeno of the University.

Prof. Singh was a Secretary for the year of 2008~2009 and vice-president for the year of 2009-2010 at the Rotary Club of Jawalakhel, Kathmandu, Nepal.  Recently, Prof. Singh has been nominated as the Convener of the Taskforce by a Minister level decision with a view to submit suggestions to the Education, Science and Technology Minister on Genomic Study, Research, Structural layout and the legal status in Nepal on July 20, 2020 and has also been nominated as the member of 8th National Science Day Celebration Main Organizing Committee 2020 under Convenership of Education, Science and Technology Minister Giriraj Mani Pokhrel on August 14, 2020.

 

Prof Bhadra Man Tuladhar, PhD, is Professor of Mathematics at Kathmandu University.  He is the Founder Member of Kathmandu University. He hold the posts of Dean, School of Science; Dean School of Engineering; Dean, School of Arts; Controller of Examinations and finally Registrar at Kathmandu University. He was the only Campus Chief of Kathmandu Valley Campus, the base institute of Kathmandu University. He was on the team in the establishment of Institute of Applied Science and Technology, Tribhuvan University at Hattisar, Dharan. He served as the Campus Chief of his institute during its physical construction period in 1976 -1979. He was a Founder Member in the establishment of Ananda Kuti Science College, Swoyambhu, 1965.

Dr. Tuladhar obtained M. Sc. (1972) and Ph. D. degree (1983) in Mathematics from Peoples’ Friendship University, Moscow, Russia. He is the founder student and first batch SLC (1957) graduate of Ananda Kuti Vidya Peeth, Swoyambhu. Dr. Tuladhar has supervised five Nepali and one Pakistani Ph. D. candidates. He has authored a book “An Introduction to Stability of Motion” which was launched by the then Prime Minister Mr. Krishna Prasad Bhattarai.at BICC hall in the World Mathematics Year 2000. Dr. Tuladhar is the President of Mathematical Sciences Trust – Nepal; Patron of Mathematical Association of Nepal; Past President of Nepal Mathematical Society for two terms. He is a life member of American Mathematical Society. He has participated and presented scientific papers in all major International Mathematical events including 4 times in International Mathematical Congress and chaired some scientific sessions. He has attended the Abel Prize Award Ceremony in Oslo, Norway in 2005 and 2007.

 

 

Invited Speakers:

Dr Rameshwar Adhikari, Ph.D. studied Chemistry in Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu; graduated from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany; Fellow of IUPAC and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation; recipient of POLYCHAR International Materials Science Prize; Technology Award of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology; (co-)author of 150+ research papers in peer reviewed journals and 8 books; H-index 27 and i10-index 63; (co-)guided 15 PhD researchers (6 completed), served as visiting Professor at Rouen University (France), Mahatma Gandhi University (India), Kyoto Institute of Technology (Japan); currently Executive Director at RECAST/TU.

Dr Suresh Dhungel, Ph.D. works at Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) as Senior Scientist. He holds a Master’s degree in Physics from TU, Nepal and Ph.D. in Engineering from Sungkyunkwan University, South Korea. His field of research varies from design and fabrication of solar cells to synthesis, characterization and application of nanomaterials in optoelectronic devices. He received Award from the President of the Sungkyunkwan University of South Korea for Academic Excellence in Ph.D. He is also the recipient of Mohandhoj Basnet Prabidhi Pragya Puraskar in 2007. He has co-authored 35 research articles in SCI journals.   He led Faculty of Technology of NAST as the Chief of Faculty for 2 years.  He is also designated as the spokesperson of NAST.

Dr. Rajani Malla, Ph.D., is a Professor of Microbiology and Head of the Department of Biotechnology at Central Department of Biotechnology, Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal. After completing her Ph.D. degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), India, Dr. Malla served in different academic positions within TU. She is also a member of the course development committee in TU and Purbanchal University and a visiting faculty in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Additionally, she is also involved in several organizations, like the Nepalese Society of Microbiology (president), International Nepalese Biomedical Society, Nepal Chapter (vice-president), Nepal Biotechnology Association, etc. She is the recipient of Shikshya Puraskar, 2006 and Nepal Bidhya Bhusan Kha, 2007.

Dr. Malla is a prolific researcher and has supervised more than 20 postgraduate students (including Ph.D. and Masters) in TU and JNU. She has also authored several peer-reviewed scientific articles and books.
