S&T Investment and Policies

An overview

“S&T Investment and Policies” symposium sessions will cover federal and provincial governments strategic policy and directions on S&T investment and application of Science and Technology. The session aims to cover areas of innovation, start-up, technology transfer, product development and commercialization. The presentations will also focus on federal and state governments funding and grants policy to research enterprises and start-ups, intellectual property, strategic partnership between public research institutions, universities, and industries, interdisciplinary collaborative approach with focus on indigenous technologies and indigenous products and emerging areas.

Objectives

This symposium session will create a platform for Diaspora and Nepali scientific communities and potential collaboration between S&T institution. The symposium will review the current S&T policies and practices and provide a strategic policy paper to Nepal Government Science and Technology initiatives and 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs).

S&T Development in Nepal – Background

In the 70-year span, Nepal’s S&T policy moved slowly due to poor policy and funding barely 0.11 to 0.3 % of GDP. It has failed to make a direct impact on socio-economic prosperity. Nepal Government recently promised to increase S&T from 0.45 to 1.0% $ of GDP and incentives for the private sector to improve S&T capacity for innovation and collaborative research through strong partnership and co-investment for the development of S&T to benefit from it.

The focus area of the sessions is:

  1. Nepal Science and Technology policy Initiatives.
  2. Status of start-up, technology transfer, product development and commercialization.
  3. Nepal Government funding and grants policy to research enterprises and start-ups
  4. Intellectual property issues
  5. Strategic partnership between public research institutions, universities, industries, and collaborative approach
