S3: Sustainable Environment, Disaster and Risk Management

SYMPOSIUM: Sustainable Environment and Disaster and Risk Management (SEDRM)

Third NRN Global Knowledge Convention

October 17 and 18, 2023

VENUE: Soaltee Hotel, Kathmandu, Nepal, and by Virtual Connection

An Overview:

The SEDRM Symposium seeks to evaluate the challenges and opportunities related to measuring greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating climate-related disasters, understanding the impact of climate change on health and well-being, and adopting sustainable energy sources. We must work together as a society to manage the risks of environmental disasters. All sectors, institutions, and disciplines should collaborate and gather evidence to develop Critical Elements for Adaptation to Climate Change, disaster, and risk management. Nepalese diaspora and local experts in Nepal can partner with policymakers, practitioners, scientists, and citizens to achieve this goal. Taking proactive measures to prevent disasters is crucial in addressing technical and governance gaps. Suggestions for establishing a knowledge network, promoting collaboration and research initiatives, and integrating disaster risk can lead to a more environmentally friendly and technologically advanced Nepal. The symposium also stresses the importance of government involvement in raising global awareness of climate justice in international forums like SAARC and the United Nations, and many others. This is particularly important as transboundary air pollution is causing the Himalayas to melt.

Introduction

It is indisputable that climate change has led to disastrous consequences worldwide, causing the loss of human life and economic damage (https://www.ipcc.ch/).Therefore, our ethical duty is to shift our perspective from being human centered to one that values nature and is eco-friendly. Nepal, being resource-constrained, is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change and environmental variability. Leveraging the expertise of Nepalese diaspora professionals in fields such as Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences, agriculture, infrastructure, and natural sciences can significantly aid in the country’s pursuit of sustainable development and make better air quality in the country. The NRNA has united Nepalese diaspora experts through skill-based conferences to support environmental management, sustainability research, innovation, policymaking, and practitioner communities. The SEDRM symposium aims to address Nepal’s environmental, social, and developmental challenges through scientific knowledge, technological advancements, and ethical guidelines. The symposium will prioritize climate change, environmental issues, risk management, and sustainable socio-economic growth.

The Symposium will focus on Environmental Pollution (Air, Water and Solid Waste),Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies,Sustainability of Natural Resource Uses (Land, Water, Forest, Biodiversity),Disaster Preparedness and Early Warning Systems, Disaster Response and Recovery, Climate Adaptation and Resilience,Policy, Governance, and International Cooperation, Social Equity and Environmental Justice, Climate Action Plan for Urban Planning and Sustainable Cities, Policy Framework and Policy Gaps, Environmental impacts on Health.
